Major County is a county in the state of Oklahoma in the United States . The county seat is Fairview .

The county is located in northwest Oklahoma, about 60 km to the north from Kansas and has an area of ​​2,481 square kilometers, of which 3 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Woods County , Alfalfa County , Garfield County , Kingfisher County , Blaine County , Dewey County, and Woodward County .

history

Major County was formed on July 16, 1907 from parts of Woods County. It was named after John C. Major , a member of the Constituent Assembly ("Constitutional Convention") of Oklahoma.

Two buildings in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of June 3, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Major County had 7,545 people in 3,046 households and 2,208 families. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 94.96 percent white, 0.19 percent African American, 0.90 percent Native American, 0.09 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 2.4 percent were from others ethnic groups and 1.44 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 4.02 percent of the population.

Of the 3,046 households, 31.0 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 63.7 percent were married couples living together, 6.0 percent were single mothers. 27.5 percent were not families, 25.2 percent were single households, and 13.5 percent of the households had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 2.92 people.
