The Bryan County is a county in the US state of Oklahoma . At the 2010 census , the county had 42,416 people and a population density of 18 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Durant , which was named after Dickson Durant .
geography
The county is located in southern Oklahoma and borders Texas , from which it is separated by the Red River . Bryan County covers an area of 2,443 square kilometers, 90 square kilometers of which is water. It borders on the following counties:

history
Bryan County was formed on July 16, 1907 as the original county from Choctaw Land. It was named after William Jennings Bryan , an American lawyer, statesman and politician. Settlement began in 1843 with the construction of Fort Washita and the first post office opened on November 4, 1844. In 1872, the first Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad was built through the county.
The county has a National Historic Landmark , Fort Washita . 15 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of May 21, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Bryan County had 36,534 people in 14,422 households and 9,936 families. The population density was 16 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 80.02 percent white, 1.42 percent African American, 12.16 percent Native American, 0.44 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.08 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 4.84 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 2.65 percent of the population.
Of the 14,422 households, 30.4 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 54.0 percent were married couples living together, 10.8 percent were single mothers. 31.1 percent were not families, 26.6 percent were single households and 11.5 percent of the households had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 2.98.
24.8 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 11.7 percent between 18 and 24, 25.7 percent between 25 and 44, 22.3 percent between 45 and 64 and 15.4 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 95.1 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over, there were 92.4 men.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 27,888 , and the median income for a family was $ 33,984. Males had a median income of $ 26,831 versus $ 20,087 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,217. 14.0 percent of families and 18.4 percent of the population are below the poverty line.
