Custer County is a county in the state of Oklahoma in the United States . The county seat is Arapaho .

The county is located in western Oklahoma, about 60 km from Texas and has an area of ​​2595 square kilometers, of which 40 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Dewey County , Blaine County , Caddo County , Washita County , Beckham County, and Roger Mills Counties .

George A. Custer

Custer County was formed on April 19, 1892 as the original county from Cheyenne country as G County . On November 6, 1896, it was renamed Custer County, after US General George Armstrong Custer , who was killed in the Battle of Little Bighorn . The county was settled by white settlers during the third official land occupation ( Oklahoma Land Run ) on April 19, 1892. On this day, the first newspaper in the county, Arapaho Arrow , which was printed in Arapaho until 1892, appeared.

As of the 2000 census , Custer County had 26,142 people in 10,136 households and 6,578 families. The population density was 10 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 81.41 percent white, 2.87 percent African American, 5.81 percent Native American, 0.88 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 5.8 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 3.20 percent were descended from two or more races. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 94.9 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over, there were 92.0 men.

The median income for a household in the city was $ 28,524 , and the median income for a family was $ 37,247. Males had a median income of $ 27,066 versus $ 19,479 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,584. 12.4 percent of families and 18.5 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
