Mayes County is a county in the state of Oklahoma in the United States . The county seat is Pryor .

The county is located in northeast Oklahoma, about 60 km north of Kansas and has an area of ​​1770 square kilometers, of which 71 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Craig County , Delaware County , Cherokee County , Wagoner County, and Rogers County .

history

Mayes County was formed on July 16, 1907 as the original county from Cherokee Country. It was named after either Samuel H. Mayes , a Cherokee leader from 1891 to 1895, or his predecessor Joel B. Mayes .

The Pensacola Dam is one of five entries for the county in the NRHP.

Six buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of June 4, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Mayes County had 38,369 people in 14,823 households and 10,820 families. The population density was 23 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 72.14 percent white, 0.30 percent African American, 19.10 percent Native American, 0.28 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.62 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 7.55 percent were descended from two or more races. The median income for a household in the county is $ 31,125 , and the median income for a family is $ 37,542. Males had a median income of $ 31,668 versus $ 20,573 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,350. 11.2 percent of families and 14.3 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
