Latimer County is a county in the state of Oklahoma in the United States . The county seat is in Wilburton .

The county is located in southeast Oklahoma, about 60 km to the east from Arkansas and has an area of 1,888 square kilometers, of which 18 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Haskell County , Le Flore County , Pushmataha County, and Pittsburg County .
history
Latimer County was formed from Choctaw Land in 1902 as the original county . It was named after James S. Latimer a member of the Constituent Assembly ("Constitutional Convention") of Oklahoma.

According to the 2000 census , Latimer County had 10,692 people in 3,951 households and 2,868 families. The population density was 6 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 73.01 percent white, 0.96 percent African American, 19.42 percent Native American, 0.18 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.51 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 5.91 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.53 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 3,951 households, 32.2 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 56.9 percent were married couples living together, 11.5 percent were single mothers. 27.4 percent were not families, 24.9 percent were single households, and 12.3 percent of the households had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.00 people.
25.7 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 11.4 percent between 18 and 24, 24.2 percent between 25 and 44, 22.5 percent between 45 and 64 and 16.1 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 97.5 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were 94.7 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 23,962 , and the median income for a family is $ 29,661. Males had a median income of $ 27,449 versus $ 19,577 for females. The per capita income was $ 12,842. 19.0 percent of families and 22.7 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
