Muskogee County is a county in the state of Oklahoma in the United States . The county seat is Muskogee .

The county is located in east-east Oklahoma, about 40 miles from Arkansas and has an area of ​​2,173 square kilometers, of which 65 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by counties: Wagoner County , Cherokee County , Sequoyah County , Haskell County , McIntosh County, and Okmulgee Counties .

history

Muskogee County was formed as the original county from Muskogee Land on July 16, 1907 . It was named after the North American Indian tribe of the Muskogee .

As of the 2000 census , Muskogee County had 69,451 people in 26,458 households and 18,467 families. The population density was 33 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 63.73 percent white, 13.16 percent African American, 14.88 percent Native American, 0.58 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.19 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 6.43 percent were descended from two or more races. The median income for a household in the city was $ 28,438 , and the median income for a family was $ 34,793. Males had a median income of $ 28,670 versus $ 20,457 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,828. 14.1 percent of families and 17.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
