Ellis County is a county in the state of Oklahoma in the United States . The county seat is Arnett .

The county is located in northwest Oklahoma, borders Texas to the west and has an area of ​​3,190 square kilometers, of which 7 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Harper County , Woodward County , Dewey County , Roger Mills County , Hemphill County, Texas, Lipscomb County, Texas, and Beaver County .

history

Ellis County was formed on July 16, 1907 from parts of the defunct Day County and Woodward County. It was named after Abraham H. Ellis , the President of the Constituent Assembly ("Constitutional Convention") of Oklahoma. The county was settled by white settlers during the third official land occupation ( Oklahoma Land Run ) on April 19, 1892.

Ten buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of May 29, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Ellis County had 4,075 people in 1,769 households and 1,218 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.29 percent white, 0.05 percent African American, 1.20 percent Native American, 0.10 percent Asian and 0.74 percent from other ethnic groups; 1.62 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 2.6 percent of the population.

21.8 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 6.0 percent between 18 and 24, 21.6 percent between 25 and 44, 28.6 percent between 45 and 64 and 22.0 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 45 years. For every 100 females there were 97.7 males. For every 100 women aged 18 years or over, there were 95.1 men.

The median income for a household in the city was $ 27,951 , and the median income for a family was $ 33,750. Males had a median income of $ 27,237 versus $ 17,772 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,472. 9.2 percent of families and 12.5 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
