Okfuskee County is a county in the state of Oklahoma in the United States . The county seat is Okemah .

The county is east of the geographic center of Oklahoma and covers an area of ​​1,629 square kilometers, of which 11 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Creek County , Okmulgee County , McIntosh County , Hughes County , Seminole County , Pottawatomie County, and Lincoln County .

history

Okfuskee County was formed on July 16, 1907 as the original county from Muskogee Land. It was named after an ancient Indian town in Cleburne County , Alabama .

As of the 2000 census , Okfuskee County had 11,814 people in 4,270 households and 2,971 families. The population density was 7 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 65.46 percent white, 10.41 percent African American, 18.20 percent Native American, 0.08 percent Asian and 0.57 percent from other ethnic groups; 5.27 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.64 percent of the population.

Of the 4,270 households, 29.2 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 54.1 percent were married couples living together, 11.2 percent were single mothers. 30.4 percent were not families, 27.8 percent were single households, and 14.5 percent of the households had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 3.06 people.

24.6 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.2 percent between 18 and 24, 26.7 percent between 25 and 44, 24.2 percent between 45 and 64 and 16.3 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 106.5 males. For every 100 women aged 18 years or over, there were 107.9 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 24,324 , and the median income for a family is $ 30,325. Males had a median income of $ 24,129 versus $ 17,819 for females. The per capita income was $ 12,746. 17.3 percent of families and 23.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
