Payne County is a county in the US state of Oklahoma in the United States . The county seat is Stillwater .

The county is located in north-central Oklahoma, about 90 km from Kansas and has an area of 1806 square kilometers, of which 28 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Noble County , Pawnee County , Creek County , Lincoln County, and Logan Counties .
history
Payne County was formed as the original Free Territory county in 1890. It was named after David L. Payne , who is also considered the father of Oklahoma and who gave the state free to colonize. The county was settled by white settlers during the first official land occupation ( Oklahoma Land Run ) on April 22, 1889.

As of the 2000 census , Payne County had 68,190 people in 26,680 households and 15,314 families. The population density was 38 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 84.33 percent white, 3.63 percent African American, 4.58 percent Native American, 3.00 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.77 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 3.64 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 2.15 percent of the population.
Of the 26,680 households, 25.9 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 45.6 percent were married couples living together, 8.3 percent were single mothers. 42.6 percent were not families, 30.1 percent were single households and 8.1 percent of the households had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.29 and the average family size was 2.90 people.
19.6 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 25.9 percent between 18 and 24, 26.2 percent between 25 and 44, 17.6 percent between 45 and 64 and 10.8 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 28 years. For every 100 females there were 103.3 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were 102.6 men.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 28,733 , and the median income for a family was $ 40,823. Males had a median income of $ 31,132 versus $ 21,113 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,983. 10.8 percent of families and 20.3 percent of the population are below the poverty line.
