Pawnee County is a county in the state of Oklahoma in the United States . The county seat is Pawnee .

The county is located in north-central Oklahoma, about 50 km from Kansas and has an area of ​​1,541 square kilometers, of which 66 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Osage County , Tulsa County , Creek County , Payne County, and Noble Counties .

history

Pawnee County was formed from Cherokee Country in 1893 as the original county . It was named after the Pawnee , a North American Indian tribe. The county was settled by white settlers during the fourth official land occupation ( Oklahoma Land Run ) on September 16, 1893.

As of the 2000 census , Pawnee County had 16,612 people in 6,383 households and 4,748 families. The population density was 11 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 82.27 percent white, 0.69 percent African American, 12.13 percent Native American, 0.20 percent Asian, 0.05 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.24 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 4.42 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.16 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The median income for a household in the city was $ 31,661 , and the median income for a family was $ 37,274. Males had a median income of $ 29,946 versus $ 21,069 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,261. 9.6 percent of families and 13.0 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
