Ottawa County is a county in the state of Oklahoma in the United States . The county seat is Miami .

The county is located in the extreme northeast of Oklahoma, borders Kansas to the north and Missouri to the east and has an area of 1,255 square kilometers, of which 35 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Cherokee County, Kansas, Newton County, Missouri, McDonald County, Missouri, Delaware County, and Craig County .

Ottawa County was formed as the original county from Cherokee Land on July 16, 1907 . It was named after the North American Indian people of the Ottawa .

As of the 2000 census , Ottawa County had 33,194 people in 12,984 households and 9,114 families. The population density was 27 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 74.15 percent white, 0.58 percent African American, 16.53 percent Native American, 0.29 percent Asian, 0.14 percent of residents from the Pacific island region and 1.54 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 6.78 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 3.20 percent of the population.
Of the 12,984 households, 30.9 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 55.6 percent were married couples living together, 10.7 percent were single mothers. 29.8 percent were not families, 26.6 percent were single households and 13.6 percent of the households had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.98 people.
25.7 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 9.7 percent between 18 and 24, 24.8 percent between 25 and 44, 22.9 percent between 45 and 64 and 16.9 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 94.3 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were 90.1 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 27,507 , and the median income for a family is $ 32,368. Males had a median income of $ 25,725 versus $ 18,879 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,478. 13.0 percent of families and 16.6 percent of the population are below the poverty line.
