Garvin County is a county in the state of Oklahoma in the United States . The county seat is Pauls Valley .

The county is located in south-central Oklahoma and has an area of ​​2107 square kilometers, of which 16 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: McClain County , Pontotoc County , Murray County , Carter County , Stephens County, and Grady County .

history

Garvin County was formed as the original county from Chickasaw Land on July 16, 1907 . It was named after Samuel Garvin , who through marriage became a member of the Chickasaw and one of their leaders.

Eleven structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of May 30, 2018).

The small town of Elmore City is located in Garvin County, and the script for the film Footloose 1984 was based on the school dispute over the lifting of an old dance ban in 1980 .

As of the 2000 census , Garvin County had 27,210 people in 10,865 households and 7,605 families. The population density was 13 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 84.93 percent white, 2.55 percent African American, 7.36 percent Native American, 0.23 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.54 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 3.34 percent were descended from two or more races. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 92.7 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over, there were 88.8 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 28,070 , and the median income for a family is $ 34,774. Males had a median income of $ 28,033 versus $ 18,940 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,856. 11.4 percent of families and 15.9 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
