The Atoka County is a county in the US state of Oklahoma . At the 2010 census , the county had 14,182 people and a population density of 5.6 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Atoka .

The county is located in southeast Oklahoma, about 50 km from Texas in the south and has an area of ​​2,564 square kilometers, of which 30 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

history

Atoka County was formed on July 16, 1907 as the original county from former Choctaw country. It was named after a Choctaw chief .

First white colonization began in the mid-19th century, and in 1857 the first postal service was established between Missouri and San Francisco . Boggy Depot , in the west of the county, was an important trading post in the early years and is now located in Historic Boggy Depot State Park . The county's first post office was also set up in Boggy Depot on November 5, 1849.

As of the 2000 census , Atoka County had 13,879 people in 4,964 households and 3,504 families. The population density was 5 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 75.86 percent white, 5.86 percent African American, 11.37 percent Native American, 0.23 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.58 percent from others ethnic groups and 6.09 percent were descended from two or more races. The median age was 38 years. Statistically, for every 100 females there were 117.8 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were 119.9 men.

The median income for a household in the city is $ 24,752 , and the median income for a family is $ 29,409. Males had a median income of $ 26,193 versus women of $ 18,861. The per capita income was $ 12,919. 15.7 percent of families and 19.8 percent of the population are below the poverty line.
