McClain County is a county in the state of Oklahoma in the United States . The county seat is Purcell .

geography

The county is located just south of the geographic center of Oklahoma and has an area of ​​1,503 square kilometers, of which 27 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Cleveland County , Pottawatomie County , Pontotoc County , Garvin County, and Grady County .

history

McClain County was formed as the original county from Chickasaw Land on July 16, 1907 . It was named after Charles M. McClain , a member of the Constituent Assembly ("Constitutional Convention") of Oklahoma, which met in 1906 and 1907.

According to the 2000 census , McClain County had 27,740 people in 10,331 households and 8,037 families. The population density was 19 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 87.26 percent white, 0.66 percent African American, 5.61 percent Native American, 0.22 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 2.24 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 3.98 percent were descended from two or more races. 4.86 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 98.6 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were 96.1 men.

The median income for a household in the city was $ 37,275 , and the median income for a family was $ 42,487. Males had a median income of $ 31,062 versus $ 21,506 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,158. 8.3 percent of families and 10.5 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
