McCurtain County is a county in the state of Oklahoma in the United States . The county seat is Idabel .
geography
The county is located in the extreme southeast of Oklahoma, borders Arkansas to the east and Texas to the south and has an area of 4924 square kilometers, of which 127 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Le Flore County , Polk County, Arkansas, Sevier County, Arkansas, Little River County, Arkansas, Bowie County, Texas, Red River County, Texas, Choctaw County, and Pushmataha Counties .
history
McCurtain County was formed as the original county from Choctaw Land on July 16, 1907 . It was named after Green McCurtain, a Choctaw chief and political leader .
The county has a National Historic Landmark , the Wheelock Academy . 16 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of June 5, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , McCurtain County had 34,402 people in 13,216 households and 9,541 families. The population density was 7 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 70.54 percent white, 9.30 percent African American, 13.57 percent Native American, 0.22 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.34 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 5.02 percent were descended from two or more races. 3.09 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 13,216 households, 34.0 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 53.3 percent were married couples living together, 14.6 percent were single mothers. 27.8 percent were not families, 25.4 percent were single households and 11.0 percent of the households had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.06 people.
28.2 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.3 percent between 18 and 24, 26.2 percent between 25 and 44, 23.4 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.0 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 92.8 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were 89.1 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 24,162 , and the median income for a family is $ 29,933. Males had a median income of $ 26,528 versus $ 17,869 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,693. 21.0 percent of families and 24.7 percent of the population are below the poverty line.
