Haskell County is a county in the state of Oklahoma in the United States . The county seat is Stigler .

The county is located in eastern Oklahoma, about 45 km from Arkansas and has an area of ​​1,619 square kilometers, of which 125 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Muskogee County , Sequoyah County , Le Flore County , Latimer County , Pittsburg County, and McIntosh Counties .

history

Haskell County was formed from Choctaw Land on July 16, 1907 as the original county . It was named after Charles N. Haskell , the first governor of Oklahoma.

As of the 2000 census , there were 11,792 people in 4,624 households and 3,380 families in Haskell County. The population density was 8 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 78.24 percent white, 0.61 percent African American, 14.60 percent Native American, 0.29 percent Asian and 0.45 percent from other ethnic groups; 5.81 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.50 percent of the population.

Of the 4,624 households, 31.7 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 60.6 percent were married couples living together, 9.1 percent were single mothers. 26.9 percent were not families, 24.7 percent were single households and 13.0 percent of the households had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 3.00 people.

26.0 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.1 percent between 18 and 24, 24.5 percent between 25 and 44, 24.2 percent between 45 and 64 and 17.2 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 95.7 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over, there were 92.4 men.

The median income for a household in the city was $ 24,553 , and the median income for a family was $ 29,872. Males had a median income of $ 25,493 versus $ 17,462 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,775. 16.1 percent of families and 20.5 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
