history
Cleveland County was formed in 1889 as the original county from former Indian land. It was named after Stephen Grover Cleveland (1837-1908), the 22nd and 24th President of the United States.
The county was settled by white settlers during the first official land occupation ( Oklahoma Land Run ) on April 22, 1889.
The county has a National Historic Landmark , the Bizzell Library of the University of Oklahoma . 21 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of May 28, 2018).
