Hughes County is a county in the US state of Oklahoma in the United States . The county seat is Holdenville .

The county is located slightly northwest of the geographic center of Oklahoma and has an area of ​​2,110 square kilometers, of which 20 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Okfuskee County , McIntosh County , Pittsburg County , Coal County , Pontotoc County, and Seminole Counties .

history

Hughes County was formed on July 16, 1907 as the original county from Muskogee Country. It was named after WC Hughes, a member of the Constituent Assembly ("Constitutional Convention") of Oklahoma.

Ten buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of June 1, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , there were 14,154 people in 5,319 households and 3,675 families in Hughes County. The population density was 7 people per square kilometer.
