Hughes County is a county in the US state of Oklahoma in the United States . The county seat is Holdenville .

The county is located slightly northwest of the geographic center of Oklahoma and has an area of 2,110 square kilometers, of which 20 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Okfuskee County , McIntosh County , Pittsburg County , Coal County , Pontotoc County, and Seminole Counties .
history
Hughes County was formed on July 16, 1907 as the original county from Muskogee Country. It was named after WC Hughes, a member of the Constituent Assembly ("Constitutional Convention") of Oklahoma.
Ten buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of June 1, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , there were 14,154 people in 5,319 households and 3,675 families in Hughes County. The population density was 7 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 72.77 percent white, 4.48 percent African American, 16.18 percent Native American, 0.21 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.98 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 5.36 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.49 percent of the population.
Of the 5,319 households, 28.8 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 53.5 percent were married couples living together, 11.3 percent were single mothers. 30.9 percent were not families, 28.6 percent were single households, and 16.0 percent of the households had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.96 people.
23.2 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 8.0 percent between 18 and 24, 27.2 percent between 25 and 44, 23.2 percent between 45 and 64 and 18.6 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 105.8 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were 105.5 men.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 22,621 , and the median income for a family was $ 29,153. Males had a median income of $ 22,337 versus $ 18,029 for females. The per capita income was $ 12,687. 16.7 percent of families and 21.9 percent of the population are below the poverty line.
