Stephens County is a county in the state of Oklahoma in the United States . The county seat is Duncan .

The county is located in southern Oklahoma, slightly west, is about 35 km from Texas and has an area of ​​2308 square kilometers, of which 44 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Grady County , Garvin County , Carter County , Jefferson County , Cotton County, and Comanche Counties .

history

Stephens County was formed on July 16, 1907 from parts of Comanche County and Chickasaw Land. It was named after John H. Stephens , a lawyer and member of the Texas Congress, who tried to get Oklahoma recognized as a state.

The Louis B. Simmons House is one of ten entries for the county in the NRHP.

Ten buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of June 6, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Stephens County had 43,182 people in 17,463 households and 12,590 families. The population density was 19 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 88.37 percent white, 2.20 percent African American, 4.92 percent Native American, 0.30 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.44 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.74 percent were descended from two or more races.
