Sevier County was formed on October 17, 1828 from parts of Hempstead County and Miller County. It was named after Ambrose Hundley Sevier (1801-1848), a member of the Territorial Congress and later one of the first US - Senators from Arkansas.
Demographic data
The census of 2000 after living 15,757 people in Sevier County; 5,708 households and 4,223 families were counted. The population density was 11 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 79.61 percent white, 4.94 percent African American, 1.82 percent Native American, 0.13 percent Asian, 0.06 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 11.84 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.61 percent are descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 19.72 percent of the population regardless of ethnicity.
Of the 5,708 households, 36.4 percent had children or adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 59.3 percent were married couples living together, 10.0 percent were single mothers, and 26.0 percent were non-families. 22.8 percent of all households were single households and 11.0 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.73 and the average family size was 3.19.
28.2 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 9.5 percent between 18 and 24, 27.7 percent between 25 and 44, 21.3 percent between 45 and 64 and 13.2 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 99.1 males and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there was an average of 97.0 males.
The median income for a household in the 30,144 USD , and the median income for a family 34,560 USD. Males had a median income of $ 25,709 versus $ 17,666 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,122. 14.4 percent of families and 19.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
