The Hempstead County is a county in the US state of Arkansas . The county seat is Hope . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located in southwest Arkansas, about 25 km from Texas in the southwest, about 50 km from Oklahoma to the west, about 50 km from Louisiana to the south, and has an area of ​​1,920 square kilometers, of which 33 square kilometers are water. It borders on the following counties:

history

Hempstead County was formed on December 15, 1818 from parts of Arkansas County. It was named after Edward Hempstead (1780-1817), who from 1812 to 1814, the Missouri  -  territory in the US  -  the House of Representatives represented.

According to the 2010 census , Hempstead County had 22,609 people in 8,949 households. The population density was 12 people per square kilometer.

The racial the population was composed of 59.4 percent white, 29.4 percent African American, 0.4 percent Native American, 0.4 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.9 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity, 12.0 percent of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race.
