The county is located almost in the northeast of Arkansas and borders - separated by the St. Francis River - in the east on the southeastern part of Missouri . Greene County was formed on November 5, 1833 from parts of Lawrence County. It was named after Nathaniel Greene , a general during the American Revolution. The first court hearings took place in the house of Benjamin Crowley, who came from Kentucky in 1821 and was the first white man to settle here.
Louisiana Colony Governor Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac was likely the first European to explore this area in northeast Arkansas. In 1715 the French king commissioned him to search for the sources of the St. Francis River, since rich silver deposits were suspected there.
Demographic data
As of the 2010 census , Greene County had 42,090 people in 16,392 households. The population density was 28.2 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.40 people lived in each of the 16,392 households.
The racial the population was composed of 96.4 percent white, 0.6 percent African American, 0.5 percent Native American, 0.3 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.3 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 2.1 percent of the population.
24.9 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 60.9 percent were between 18 and 64 and 14.2 percent were 65 years or older. 51.0 percent of the population was female.
The median income for a household was 37,997 USD . The per capita income was $ 17,923. 14.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
