The courthouse was one of the few that did not burn down from this period and the first trial files from April 1841 are still available.
The first European arrivals in this area were probably French hunters who left some deposits here. The first well-documented travelers in this area were the members of the Dunbar and Hunter expedition , who explored the upper and lower reaches of the Ouachita River from here in 1804 . In 1821 or 1822, Captain Hugh Bradle, a native of Tennessee, led an expedition to the area that explored the surrounding area along the Red River.
Around 1880, banker and railroad tycoon Jay Gould began laying rails in the area for one of his companies, St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railroad , which opened new trade routes for a county still suffering from the aftermath of the Civil War brought an upswing.

The county is known in the United States for its tomatoes, wine, and logging. The largest taxpayer is the timber trading and collecting company Potlatch Corp , which owns 300,000 acres of land.
