The Clay County is a county in the US -amerikanischen State Arkansas . In 2010 , the county had 16,083 residents and a population density of 9.7 people per square kilometer. With Corning , responsible for the Western District, and Piggott , responsible for the Eastern District, the county has two administrative seats ( County Seats ). The county is located in the extreme northeast of Arkansas and borders both to the east - separated by the St. Francis River - and to the north by Missouri . Clay County was formed on March 24, 1873 from parts of Greene County and Randolph Counties as Clayton County . It was named after the US  -  Senator James M. Clayton (1840-1889). In 1875, the county's name was shortened to Clay County.

The first seat of the county administration was established in Corning with the rail connection to the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway . In 1877 the seat was moved to Boydsville. But moved back again in 1881. After the further railway connection to the St. Louis, Arkansas and Texas Railroad in 1882, the places Greenway, Rector and Piggott grew quickly and the second administrative center was built in Piggott.

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census , Clay County had 16,083 people in 6,787 households. The population density was 9.7 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.4 people lived in each of the 6,787 households.

The racial the population was composed of 97.7 percent white, 0.6 percent African American, 0.3 percent Native American, 0.2 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.1 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity, 1.5 percent of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race.

21.8 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 58.2 percent were between 18 and 64 and 20.0 percent were 65 years or older. 51.0 percent of the population was female.
