history

G. Cleveland

Cleveland County was formed on April 17, 1873 from parts of Bradley County, Dallas County, Jefferson County and Lincoln County as Dorsey County . It was originally named after Stephen W. Dorsey , a US Senator from Arkansas. In 1885 it was renamed Cleveland County in honor of the newly elected President Grover Cleveland (1837-1908).

On April 25, 1864, during the Civil War , the Battle of Marks Mills between Confederate and Union forces took place here, which ended in favor of the Confederate.

In 1889, a fire destroyed the County Courthouse in Toledo. The places Rison, Kingsland and New Edinburgh competed for the seat of the county administration. After several petitions, the State Supreme Court decided on April 11, 1891 for the city of Rison.
