Van Buren County was formed on November 11, 1833 as the 29th County in Arkansas from parts of Conway County, Independence County and Izard County. It was named after the later US - President Martin Van Buren (1782-1862), who at that time vice president was.
Demographic data
According to the 2000 census , Van Buren County had 16,192 people. Of these, 276 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 6,825 households and 4,804 families. The population density was 9 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.79 percent white, 0.31 percent African American, 0.75 percent Native American, 0.25 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.37 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.48 percent are descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race 1.33 percent of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 6,825 households, 25.2 percent had children or adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 59.1 percent were married couples living together, 7.7 percent were single mothers, and 29.6 percent were non-families. 26.4 percent of all households were single households and 14.4 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 2.79 people.
21.5 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 6.6 percent between 18 and 24, 23.0 percent between 25 and 44, 25.5 percent between 45 and 64 and 23.3 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 44 years. Statistically, there were 96.7 males for every 100 females and an average of 93.0 males for every 100 females aged 18 and over.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 27,004 , and the median income for a family is $ 32,284. Males had a median income of $ 25,821 versus $ 18,862 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,603. 11.6 percent of families and 15.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
