Sharp County was formed on July 18, 1868 from parts of Lawrence County. It was named after Ephraim Sharp , a member of the Arkansas government and representative of Lawrence, Randolph, and Greene Counties.
Demographic data
As of the 2000 census , Sharp County had 17,119 people in 7,211 households and 5,141 families. The population density was 11 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.14 percent white, 0.49 percent African American, 0.68 percent Native American, 0.12 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.16 percent from other ethnic groups Groups. Hispanic or Latino of any race 1.39 percent of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 7,211 households, 25.8 percent had children or adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 59.9 percent were married couples living together, 8.1 percent were single mothers, and 28.7 percent were non-families. 25.6 percent of all households were single households and 14.4 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.34 and the average family size was 2.79 people.
21.9 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 6.3 percent between 18 and 24, 22.8 percent between 25 and 44, 25.5 percent between 45 and 64 and 23.6 percent were 65 years or older. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 92.4 males and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were an average of 90.2 males.
The median income for a household in the 25,152 USD , and the median income for a family 29,691 USD. Males had a median income of $ 23,329 versus $ 16,884 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,143. 13.2 percent of families and 18.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
