Sharp County was formed on July 18, 1868 from parts of Lawrence County. It was named after Ephraim Sharp , a member of the Arkansas government and representative of Lawrence, Randolph, and Greene Counties.

Demographic data

As of the 2000 census , Sharp County had 17,119 people in 7,211 households and 5,141 families. The population density was 11 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.14 percent white, 0.49 percent African American, 0.68 percent Native American, 0.12 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.16 percent from other ethnic groups Groups.
