Oakes Murphy

Nathan Oakes Murphy (born October 14, 1849 in Jefferson , Lincoln County , Maine , †  August 22, 1908 in Coronado , California ) was an American politician and governor of the Arizona Territory . He was a member of the Republican Party .

Career

Oakes Murphy attended public schools and then taught himself in Wisconsin . Murphy then went to the Western Frontier, where he finally settled in Prescott , Arizona in April 1883 . There he was engaged in mining and real estate business. On March 21, 1889 he was appointed Secretary of the Arizona Territory. He was also a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1892 . From March 11, 1892 to April 12, 1894 he held the office of governor in the Arizona Territory.

After serving as governor, Murphy took up his post as a Republican MP in the 54th  Congress on March 4, 1895 and stayed there until March 3, 1897. In 1896, he decided not to run for re-election. Instead, Murphy was re-elected governor of the Arizona Territory on August 1, 1898, an office he held until his resignation on July 1, 1902. In 1900 he ran unsuccessfully as a Republican for the 57th  Congress.

He died on August 22, 1908 in Coronado and was buried in Masonic Cemetery in San Diego . He was also married twice. He married Sarah E. Banghart in 1884, from whom he divorced in 1903. He then married Emma D. Sells in 1904.
