Ronald Sylvester Barber (born August 25, 1945 in Wakefield , England ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . He was a member of the US House of Representatives for Southeast Arizona from 2012 to 2015 .

biography

Barber was born in Wakefield in 1945. His father was stationed there. The family later returned to the United States and Barber grew up in Tucson , Arizona . He attended Rincon High School there . After finishing school in 1963, he studied at the University of Arizona , where he received his Bachelor of Arts (BA) in 1967 .

Barber became a businessman, running a small business with his wife in Tucson. From 1976 to 2006 he worked in the Arizona Department of Economic Security in the Division of Developmental Disabilities , which he later served as director. From 2007 to 2012 he served on the staff of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords . In this capacity, he accompanied Giffords on January 8, 2011 to a public question and answer session in a shopping center in Casas Adobes , about 17 kilometers north of Tucson, during the course of which there was an attack on Giffords . Six people were subsequently killed and 13 others, including Barber, were injured, some seriously.

When Giffords resigned her mandate for health reasons as a result of the assassination attempt on her , Barber successfully ran for the Democratic Party in the now necessary by-election to fill the vacant seat and from June 12, 2012 belonged to the United States House of Representatives for the 8th Congressional electoral district of Arizona, which included the southeast of the state and parts of Tucson .
