Mo Udall

Morris King "Mo" Udall (born June 15, 1922 in St. Johns , Arizona , † December 12, 1998 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ) who worked for the state of Arizona from 1961 to 1991 in US House of Representatives . The tall man was a professional basketball player with the Denver Nuggets before his political career . The staunch environmental politician was known for his liberal views and humor.

The reporter David Broder called him "too funny to be president ", which is also the title of Udall's autobiography in the 1980s. In 1976 Udall had only narrowly lost the presidential election primaries to future incumbent Jimmy Carter . In 1996 he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom .

His brother Stewart Udall was Home Secretary under John F. Kennedy . Udall's son Mark represented the state of Colorado in the US House of Representatives from 1999 to 2009 before moving to the Senate within Congress .

Point Udall , the westernmost point in the United States, is named after him.
