Greg Stanton (* 8. March 1970 in Phoenix , Arizona ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . The lawyer has represented Arizona's 9th Congressional electoral district in the United States House of Representatives since 2019 . He was Mayor of Phoenix from 2012 to 2018 .

Life

Stanton earned a bachelor's degree from Marquette University and a law degree ( JD ) from the University of Michigan in 1995 . He then worked as a lawyer until 2000.

He is married and has two children.

politics

Stanton was elected to Phoenix City Council in 2000 and confirmed in office in 2001 and 2005. He held this position until 2009. In September 2011 he was elected mayor to succeed Phil Gordon and was re-elected in 2015. His term of office lasted from 2012 to 2018.

In the 2018 election , Stanton ran for the seat in the House of Representatives for Kyrsten Sinema , who was aiming for a seat in the United States Senate . He was an unopposed candidate in the democratic primaries. In the general election he prevailed with 60.9% of the vote against the Republican Steve Ferrara. He took up his mandate on January 3, 2019.
