John R. Murdock

John Robert Murdock (born April 20, 1885 in Lewistown , Lewis County , Missouri , † February 14, 1972 in Phoenix , Arizona ) was an American politician . Between 1937 and 1953 he represented the first constituency of the state of Arizona in the US House of Representatives .

Early years and advancement

John Murdock attended the public schools of his home country and then through 1912 the State Teacher's College in Kirksville . He later studied at the University of Iowa , the University of Arizona and the University of California . From 1904 he was active in various positions in the school service. He rose from a simple teacher to the dean of the Arizona State Teacher's College . He held this office from 1933 to 1937. He was also the author of several school books for the subjects of history and politics.

Political career

John Murdock became a member of the Democratic Party . In the 1936 congressional elections, he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington as a member of the State of Arizona . After he was re-elected in the following years, he was able to complete a total of eight legislative terms in Congress between January 3, 1937 and January 3, 1953 . In the meantime, he was Chairman of the Committee on Memorials and a member of the Committee on Irrigation and Reclamation and the Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs .

After he was not confirmed in office in the 1952 congressional election, he retired to Scottsdale . John Murdock died in Phoenix in 1972.
