Granville Henderson Oury (born March 12, 1825 in Abingdon , Washington County , Virginia , †  January 11, 1891 in Tucson , Arizona ) was an American politician . Between 1881 and 1885 he represented the Arizona Territory in the US House of Representatives as a delegate .

Early years

In 1836, Granville Oury moved with his parents to Bowling Green , Missouri . There he attended public schools and then studied law. In 1848 he was admitted to the bar. That same year he moved to San Antonio , Texas, and a year later he moved to Marysville , California , where he participated in the gold rush. In 1856 he moved to Tucson to work as a lawyer. He was also appointed judge for what is now New Mexico and Arizona.

Civil war activities

During the civil war , Oury supported the Confederate States . Since January 1862 he was a delegate in the Provisional Confederate Congress . That same year he resigned to join the Southern Army. During the war he was mainly used in Texas and Louisiana . After the war and his oath of allegiance to the United States, he returned to practice as a lawyer in Tucson.

Political career

Granville Oury was a member of the Democratic Party . In 1866 he was elected to the Arizona Territory House of Representatives. In 1869 he was appointed Attorney General in this area . After moving to Phoenix in 1871, he became a district attorney in Maricopa County . He held this office from 1871 to 1873. After that he was again a member of the territorial parliament from 1873 to 1875. He was temporarily president of the house. In 1878 he applied unsuccessfully for the position of delegate to the US House of Representatives. Instead, he became a Pinal County district attorney in 1879 .

In the congressional election of 1880, Oury was elected as his party's candidate to succeed John G. Campbell as the Arizona Territory delegate to the US Congress . After re-election in 1882, he was able to exercise this mandate between March 4, 1881 and March 3, 1885 in two legislative terms. In 1884 Oury was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention , at which Grover Cleveland was nominated for the party's presidential candidate. In the same year, Oury declined to run for Congress again.

Another résumé

Upon his return from the federal capital Washington , Oury worked as a lawyer in Florence . Between 1889 and 1890 he was again District Attorney in Pina County. Granville Oury died of throat cancer on January 11, 1891.
