Arthur T. LaPrade

Arthur Thornton LaPrade senior (born March 3, 1895 in Winslow , Arizona , † June 30, 1957 in Phoenix , Arizona) was an American lawyer and politician ( Democratic Party ).

Career

Arthur Thornton LaPrade senior was born in Navajo County in 1895 to Elizabeth "Lizzie" Dover (1858-1911) and Fernando Thornton "Ferd" LaPrade (1852-1936), and grew up there. Nothing is known about his youth. LaPrade graduated from the University of California, Berkeley and, in 1920, from the University of California Berkeley Law School .

In 1923 he became the assistant district attorney for Maricopa County . He was appointed District Attorney of Maricopa County in 1925. LaPrade was Attorney General of Arizona from 1933 to 1935 . From 1939 to 1945 he was a judge on the Arizona Superior Court and from 1947 to 1957 on the Arizona Supreme Court , where he served a few times as Chief Justice . After his death in Phoenix in 1957, he was buried there in the Greenwood Memory Lawn Cemetery .

He married Lucile "Lucy" Hooper (1892–1983), daughter of Mary Lucy Whitmer (1855–1949) and Asa Hooper (1852–1926). The couple had four children: Arthur Thornton “AT” LaPrade junior (1920–1994), Loren Hooper LaPrade (1922–2010), Janice LaPrade (1924–2012) and Paul Whitmer LaPrade (1926–1986). Arthur Thornton Jr. and Paul Whitmer both became lawyers.

Trivia

The LaPrade family was responsible for building the Winslow Opera House , where silent films were shown.
