Robert Pickrell

Robert W. Pickrell (born November 25, 1922 in Prescott , Arizona - † August 10, 2017 ) was an American officer , lawyer and politician ( Republican Party ).

Career

Robert W. Pickrell, son of Charles U. Pickrell senior, was born in Yavapai County in 1925 . His family soon moved to Phoenix ( Maricopa County ). Pickrell went to school there. When his father as Director of the Extension Agricultural appointed, the family moved to Tucson ( Pima County ). There he finished high school and then went to the University of Arizona .

His training was interrupted by the Second World War. Pickrell served as a corporal in the 45th  Infantry Division , which took part in the fighting from Anzio to Rome . He was one of the first wave of combat troops in Operation Dragoon , which landed on August 15, 1944 during the Allied invasion of southern France. After the war he returned to the University of Arizona, where he received his bachelor's degree in 1947 and his Juris Doctor in 1949 .

After graduating from law school, he joined the law firm of Gentry & Gentry in Bisbee ( Cochise County to work). He also briefly practiced in Willcox, Cochise County. In 1951 he returned to Phoenix as Attorney for the Industrial Commission . From 1953 to 1955 he was Assistant Attorney General of Arizona, representing the Land Department and the Corporation Commission during that time .

He was with the Pickrell, Hunter, Bartlett & Penn law firm for five years .

Pickrell was active in the Republican Party for a long time. In 1960 he was elected Attorney General of Arizona and served from 1961 to 1965.

He then served as Executive Director for the Maricopa County Legal Aid Society and City Attorney of Avondale (Maricopa County).

In 1974 he was appointed judge on the Superior Court of Maricopa County - a position he held until 1991. In the course of time he pursued civil, criminal, youth and family law.

During his legal career he has often worked pro bono to help the needy and underrepresented. His involvement in the public service was of great importance to organizations such as Community Legal Services (CLS) and the Salvation Army Legal Aid Program . In 2002 the CLS awarded him the newly created Lifetime Commitment to Justice Award, which bears his name.
