action

In the old port of Marseille , César runs the Bar de la Marine with his son Marius . Fanny, daughter of the fishmonger Honorine, loves the young Marius. But he shies away from being bound and dreams of the big wide world. He wants to hire a sailing ship and experience adventure. The rich, widowed canvas maker Panisse woos Fanny, but she chooses Marius. The lovers spend a night together. The next day, Marius has the opportunity to hire a three-master. Fanny doesn't hold him back and urges him to realize his lifelong dream now because she fears that he will hate her all his life otherwise.

Fanny is pregnant and desperate. She confesses her situation to Panisse, who she welcomes in a friendly and loving manner. He asks to give him the son he is expecting so that his business can have a successor. Fanny marries Panisse, who becomes a loving husband and father. Marius comes back and confronts Fanny in Panisse's house. She confesses to Marius that she still loves him. César and Panisse join in. Panisse gives Fanny the freedom to choose. But he asks to take his life sooner than the child. Then he leaves the room. Marius and Fanny swear eternal love to each other. César implores Marius to renounce Fanny for the child's sake. Fanny also knows that she cannot leave Panisse for the sake of her son. When César leads Marius out of the room, Fanny collapses, overwhelmed by the pain.
