Horst Schreiber (born 1961 in Vienna ) is an Austrian contemporary historian and university professor .

life and work

Schreiber studied history and French at the University of Innsbruck and graduated in 1985. He then worked as a high school history and French teacher. In 1991 he obtained his doctorate, in 2001 the Venia docendi for contemporary history . Since 1995 he has been teaching at the evening grammar school for professionals in Innsbruck. He is lecturer for methodology and didactics for history, social studies and political education (GSP) at the University of Innsbruck.

Research priorities

Schreiber's main research interests are the regional history of Tyrol and Vorarlberg , the Nazi era, Jewish history , the world of work as well as the history of education and education policy . He is editor of the studies on history and politics , board member of the Michael Gaismair Society , co-editor of the Gaismair yearbooks and the social science series transblick of the Gaismair Society. He also acts as the head of the decentralized Tyrol network of the bmbwk project “National Socialism and Holocaust”, which is entitled “ Memory and the Present ”, as the editor of the series “ National Socialism in the Austrian Federal States” of Remember.at and as a scientific advisory board for the design of the Austria exhibition in the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum. Horst Schreiber has also been a member of the Innsbruck Victim Protection Commission since 2011 .

Work during the Nazi era

The work of the contemporary historian is extensive regarding the coming to terms with the Nazi era in Tyrol. He wrote a monograph about the resistance fighter Franz Mair and an article about the Nazi euthanasia doctor Hans Czermak , described the takeover of power by the National Socialists in Tyrol, the Höttinger Saalschlacht , the Tyrolean resistance movement , the Reichenau labor education camp and the liberation monument in Innsbruck. He was the project manager for researching the names of the Tyrolean resistance fighters, which were affixed to the side walls of the liberation monument, and designed a homepage for the redesign of Eduard-Wallnöfer-Platz in Innsbruck. He also commented on the grave find of 220 alleged Nazi victims in Hall in Tirol .

Undaunted, the historian ventured into particularly explosive topics in Tyrol such as the NSDAP membership of Eduard Wallnöfer , the long-time governor of the post-war period, or the role of the Swarovski company before and during the Nazi era, as well as the forced labor at GE Jenbacher . Although the Swarovski company denied the historian access to its archives, Schreiber was able to uncover that the company was already oriented towards the NSDAP in the corporate state . 141 of the 571 strong workforce belonged - under pressure from management - to the then illegal party, as did at least seven members of the entrepreneurial family. Schreiber also reports on a donation from the Tyrolean Industrial Union of 100,000 Schilling to Hitler on his 49th birthday, combined with "grateful loyalty greetings", made by the president of the association, Alfred Swarovski .

Furthermore, in 2013 Schreiber headed the interdisciplinary project Alte Heimat / Schnitt / Neue Heimat , which was dedicated to Jewish Innsbruck residents who were expelled to England and Israel. The project comprised a video documentation, a book - "From Innsbruck to Israel" - and a literary book of stories - "The Second Stranger" - by Christoph W. Bauer .

Restitution of dignity

In 2010 Schreiber initiated the Tyrolean Victim Protection Commission and published “In the name of order. Home education in Tyrol ”. This gave the impetus for further research into home history in Austria as well as child and adolescent psychiatry (child observation station) under the direction of Maria Nowak-Vogl in Innsbruck.

His oral history project about former children in care in Innsbruck led in 2015 to a book publication - Restitution von dignity - as well as a radio feature, a film documentary and the theater production Jetzt wird talked about . “For decades traumatization and the ignorance of politics and society prevented children in care from speaking about the painful experiences they had to go through in public and Catholic educational institutions.” The scientific study sees itself as a gesture of late and appropriate “ reparation ” for trauma and violations of integrity of children, which was defined as children's rights in a UN Convention in 1989 . "Late, but nevertheless the reports of the former children in the home are believed, the injustice suffered is recognized and the contribution of contemporary witnesses to its elucidation is appreciated." As early as 2010, Schreiber had encouraged the state of Tyrol to recognize the suffering of children in the home and published the book In the Name of Order submitted. In 2014, he addressed experiences of violence in the SOS Children's Village in the volume Committed to Silence .

Quote

“No one had only one option, no matter how difficult the environment was. [...] During the Nazi era, people were not only passive objects of external circumstances, but also, to varying degrees, creators of their own lives despite all restrictions and external pressure. "
