Gary K. Nelson

Gary Kent Nelson (born July 12, 1935 in La Crosse , Wisconsin , † May 17, 2013 in Mesa , Arizona ) was an American lawyer and politician ( Republican Party ).

Career

Gary Kent Nelson, son of Nora Netterloe and Angus M. Nelson, was born in La Crosse County in 1935 . His childhood was overshadowed by the global economic crisis. The family then moved in the late 1930s or in the 1940s after Iowa and was there in Fort Dodge ( Webster County down). From there she moved to Arizona in 1952. The family settled in Phoenix ( Maricopa County down). Gary Kent Nelson graduated from Phoenix Union High School with honors in 1953 . He then went to Arizona State University , where he graduated with a Bachelor of Sciences in 1957 . During his student days he played in the marching band. He was a member of the Arizona State Alumni Association and in 1988 its president.

From 1957 to 1959 he served in the US Army in the Military Intelligence Corps (USAI) in St. Louis ( Missouri ). He's never been in a theater of war.

During his military service he met his future wife Juanita Moen, who was working as a nurse in St. Louis at the time. The couple had four sons: Bradley Kent, Byron Keith, Douglas P. and Gregory Neil. They were named after generals, a golfer and an astronaut.

Nelson then went to law school at the University of Arizona , where he graduated with a Bachelor of Laws in 1962 . He then worked from 1962 to 1963 as a trainee lawyer with the Chief Justice of the Arizona Supreme Court Fred C. Struckmeyer junior. In the following years he ran a law firm in Phoenix. From 1964 to 1968 he served as the Assistant Attorney General of Arizona. Nelson was elected Attorney General of Arizona in 1968 and re-elected in 1970. He held the post from 1969 to 1974. During that time, he chaired the National Association of Attorney's General. The governor of Arizona John Richard Williams then appointed him in 1974 as judge on the Arizona Court of Appeals . Nelson served as a judge for four years and resigned after losing the election to judge. He then served as Chief Staff Attorney at the Arizona Supreme Court from 1979 until his retirement in 1997 .

Nelson was president of the South Mountain Lions Club and was also a Christmas tree seller. He was on the board of directors of the South Phoenix Boys Club and chaired the Hope Lutheran church council , where he also served as a choir director ( baritone ). He also served on the Board of the Salvation Army .
