Abingdon is a town and county seat of Washington County in the US state of Virginia .
history
The current urban area was already in the 18th century on the heavily frequented Wilderness Road , which was used by many pioneers of the time. In 1860 the area was named Wolf Hills after wolves attacked Daniel Boone's dogs .
Abingdon was formally incorporated and incorporated into the state of Virginia in 1778. Just two years later, the city served as the starting point for the 300-mile march of patriots from Virginia and South Carolina , who marched to Kings Mountain . The battle there was considered a turning point in the war of independence .
Martha Washington College (named after Martha Washington ) opened in 1860 and closed again in 1932. It was renovated and reopened in 1935 as Hotel The Martha .
