John Bertrand Conlan (born September 17, 1930 in Oak Park , Illinois ) is a former American politician . Between 1973 and 1977 he represented the fourth constituency of the state of Arizona in the US House of Representatives .

Early years and advancement

John Conlan, son of well-known baseball player Jocko Conlan , attended public schools in his home in Illinois. He then studied to 1951 at Northwestern University in Evanston . After attending law school at Harvard University , he was admitted to the bar in 1954. From 1954 to 1955 he studied international law at the University of Cologne and then in The Hague . In the United States, he worked as a lawyer in Chicago . Conlan also served on the faculties of political science at the University of Maryland and Arizona State University . From 1956 to 1961 he was an officer in the US Army . At the end of his service, he had reached the rank of captain.

Political career

After serving in the army, Conlan practiced as a lawyer in Phoenix . He became a member of the Republican Party . Between 1965 and 1972 he was a member of the Arizona Senate . Between 1962 and 1972 he attended local Republican conventions as a delegate in Arizona. In the 1972 congressional elections, he was elected to the US House of Representatives for the newly created fourth constituency of Arizona. After being re-elected in 1974, he was able to exercise this mandate between January 3, 1973 and January 3, 1977. In 1976 he did not stand for re-election. Instead, he ran for a seat in the US Senate , but was defeated in the Republican primary with Sam Steiger, another Congressman, who then lost the actual election to the Democrat Dennis DeConcini .
