John Bertrand "Jocko" Conlan (born December 6, 1899 in Chicago , Illinois , † April 16, 1989 in Scottsdale , Arizona ) was an American baseball player and umpire in Major League Baseball .
biography
Jocko Conlan made his debut as an outfielder with the Chicago White Sox in the American League on July 6, 1934 and played his last game on September 29, 1935. The decisive game for him was a game against the St. Louis Browns in 1935. During the game, the match referee, Red Ormsby , suffered a heat collapse and had to be replaced. Conlan was asked if he would like to replace the umpire and said yes. From the 1936 season his career as an umpire began. John Conlan was active in minor league baseball until 1940, before he began his 25-year referee career in the National League in 1941 . He was involved as a referee in five World Series and six All-Star Games . He also worked as an umpire in three playoffs in the National League.
In 1974 Conlan was named to the Baseball Hall of Fame . He died in Scottsdale in 1989 at the age of 89. His son John became a politician and was a Republican MP for Arizona in the United States House of Representatives .
