Raúl Grijalva (born February 19, 1948 in Tucson , Arizona ) is an American politician and member of the Democratic Party . Between 2003 and 2013 he represented the seventh constituency of the state of Arizona in the US House of Representatives . Since 2013 he has represented the third constituency of his state there.

Life

childhood and education

Raúl Grijalva was born in Arizona in 1948. His father was a Mexican immigrant who immigrated to the United States through the Bracero Program in 1945 and worked on ranches in southern Arizona.

Raúl Grijalva attended Sunnyside High School until 1967 and then studied sociology at the University of Arizona . Between 1974 and 1986 he served on the Tucson School District School Board. From 1975 to 1986 he was the director of the El Pueblo Neighborhood Center . Between 1989 and 2002 he was a member of the Pima County Board of Supervisors . Since 2000 he was the district administrator in this district as its chairman.

Congressman

In the 2002 congressional elections, Grijalva was elected as his party's candidate with 59% of the vote against Ross Hieb by the Republicans for the newly established seventh constituency of Arizona in the US House of Representatives. There he took up his mandate on January 3, 2003. In the 2004, 2006 and 2008 elections, he was confirmed in this office with over 60% of the votes. In the following elections in 2010, 2012 and 2014, his share of the vote was slightly lower at 50.23, 58.36 and 55.7 percent, respectively. Grivalja is a member of the Education and Labor Committee and the Committee on Natural Resources . He is considered liberal and is committed to environmental protection. Re-elected in 2016, he will also serve in the 115th Congress of the United States , which will meet on January 3, 2017 . Its new legislative period runs until January 3, 2019.

In the 2016 presidential election campaign, he supported Bernie Sanders from the start .

Raúl Grijalva has three daughters with his wife Ramona.
