Basil Spalding de Garmendia (born February 28, 1860 in Baltimore , Maryland , † November 9, 1932 in Saint-Raphaël , France ) was an American tennis player , racket player , golfer , polo player and military attaché .
biography
Spalding de Garmendia was from the first championship in 1890 for six years US champion in rackets, a forerunner of today's squash . He came from the wealthy Garmendia family from Baltimore and spent much of his life in France, where he also died. In 1900 he attended the World Exhibition in Paris , which also hosted the Olympic Games . The American decided to compete in tennis . Together with the French record Olympian Max Décugis , he competed in men's doubles and won the silver medal. They were defeated by the Britons Laurence and Reginald Doherty in the final in three sets with 1: 6, 1: 6, 0: 6. In the individual competition, Spalding de Garmendia lost in the quarterfinals to Laurence Doherty.
In addition to his commitment to tennis, he was a golfer and polo player and a member of the yacht regatta committee at the 1900 Olympic Games . Due to the wealth of his family, Basil Spalding de Garmendia never had to work. He served as a military attaché in the US Embassy in Paris during World War I.
