Denver Nuggets was the name of an American basketball franchise from Denver , Colorado , which played in the 1948–1949 season in the NBL and in the 1949–1950 season in the NBA after the NBL was taken over on August 3, 1949 by the BAA and the league was eventually renamed the NBA. The Nuggets were the first professional sports franchise from Colorado and the first NBA franchise west of the Mississippi .

The team was founded in 1932 and had different names throughout its history until it was dissolved in 1951: Denver Safeway Pigs (1932–1938), Denver Nuggets (1939–1940), Denver American Legion (1941–1944), Denver Ambrose Jellymakers ( 1945–1946), Denver Nuggets (1946–1950) and Denver Refiners (1950–1951).
In the 1948-1949 season, the Nuggets played in the National Basketball League (NBL) and in the 1949-1950 season in the National Basketball Association (NBA). In their only NBA season, the team achieved a statistic of 11 wins and 51 losses. In 1951 the team disbanded.
