St. Johns ( Navajo : Tsézhin Deez'áhí) is a city in Apache County in the US state of Arizona . It is the administrative seat and the seat of the governor of Apache County.
geography
It is 18 miles west of the New Mexico state line. St. Johns is located on Arizona State Route 61 and US Highways 180 and 191 .
The capital of Arizona, Phoenix, is a four-hour drive and the major city of Flagstaff is a 2.5-hour drive away.
The city's airport, St. Johns Airpark, has two runways, the longer one being 5730 feet long .
history
The place was founded as a Spanish settlement with the name El Vadito , in 1873 it was renamed San Juan . It has been called St. Jones since 1880 .
Sights, events
In town is the Apache County Historical Museum , which has many artifacts from the 19th century from the settlement of the area. There are also four National Register of Historic Places in the city with the Isaacson Building , the Lower Zuni River Archeological District , the Lyman Lake Rock Art Site and the Rattlesnake Point Pueblo .
At the end of August / beginning of September, an Indy Car Race will be held on the airport grounds as the Grand Prix of St. Jones .
