Fort Defiance ( Navajo : Tséhootsooí) is a census-designated place in Apache County in the US state of Arizona . It is located on the Defiance Plateau at an altitude of 2084 m.
Fort Defiance was established in 1851 to provide a military presence in Navajo County . At that time the city was still part of the US state of New Mexico .
