Fort Defiance ( Navajo : Tséhootsooí) is a census-designated place in Apache County in the US state of Arizona . It is located on the Defiance Plateau at an altitude of 2084 m.

Fort Defiance was established in 1851 to provide a military presence in Navajo County . At that time the city was still part of the US state of New Mexico .

At the 2000 census, 92.86% of the population were indigenous, 4.53% white, 1.35% Latino, 0.30% Asian, 0.02% Pacific, 0, 22% to other ethnic groups, 1.90% stated more than one ethnic group.
