Robert Taylor Jones

Robert Taylor Jones (born February 8, 1884 in Rutledge , Grainger County , Tennessee , † June 11, 1958 in Phoenix , Arizona ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ) and governor of the state of Arizona from 1939 to 1941 .

Early years and political advancement

He was a self-taught civil engineer with work experience from various construction projects in Mexico , Nevada and the Panama Canal . In 1909 he moved to Arizona, where he worked on some short-haul railways. He also founded the Jones Drug Company , which over time grew into a chain of stores across the country. Jones decided to pursue a political career in 1930 when he was elected to the Arizona Senate, where he remained until 1938.

Governor of Arizona

Jones was elected governor of Arizona on November 8, 1939 and sworn in on January 2, 1939. During his tenure, the Office of State Historian and Office of State Librarian were merged and a minimum wage law for public works workers was passed. Furthermore, prison leave and pardons for convicts have been regulated with more rigid guidelines. He chose not to run again for governorship and left on January 6, 1941.

Jones returned to his diverse endeavors. Between 1951 and 1953 he managed the Arizona Office of Price Stabilization . Robert Jones died on June 11, 1958 and was buried in Phoenix. He was married to Elon Armstrong. The couple had three children together.
