Grainger County is a county in the state of Tennessee in the United States . The county seat is Rutledge .

The county is located in northeast Tennessee, about 35 km to the north from the southwest corner of Virginia , and has an area of ​​783 square kilometers, of which 57 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Hancock County , Hamblen County , Jefferson County , Knox County , Union County, and Claiborne Counties .

history

Grainger County was formed on April 22, 1796 from parts of Hawkins County and Knox County. It was named after Mary Grainger Blount , wife of William Blount , governor of the Southwest Territory that later became Tennessee.

The Tate Springs Springhouse is one of the county's seven entries in the NRHP.

Seven buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of August 14, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Grainger County had 20,659 people in 8,270 households and 6,161 families. The population density was 28 people per square kilometer.
