Cheatham County is a county in the state of Tennessee in the United States . The county seat is Ashland City .

The county is located northwest of the geographic center of Tennessee, about 25 miles north of Kentucky , and covers an area of 795 square kilometers, of which 12 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Robertson County , Davidson County , Williamson County , Dickson County, and Montgomery Counties .

Cheatham County was formed on February 28, 1856 from parts of Davidson County, Dickson County, Montgomery County and Robertson County. It was named after Edward Saunders Cheatham (1818-1878), a President of the Louisville and Nashville Railroad and a member of the Tennessee Senate .

One place in the county has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the Montgomery Bell Tunnel . Nine structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of August 10, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Cheatham County had 35,912 people in 12,878 households and 10,160 families. The population density was 46 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.86 percent white, 1.48 percent African American, 0.38 percent Native American, 0.18 percent Asian, 0.05 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.36 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.70 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.22 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 12,878 households, 39.6 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 64.9 percent were married couples living together, 9.6 percent were single mothers, and 21.1 percent were non-families. 16.9 percent were single households and 5.3 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.76 and the average household size was 3.08.
27.7 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 7.3 percent between 18 and 24, 33.5 percent between 25 and 44, 23.0 percent between 45 and 64 and 8.6 percent were older than 65. The mean age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 100.3 males and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 97.4 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 45,836 , and the median income for a family is $ 49,143. Males had a median income of $ 34,476 versus $ 25,191 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,882. 5.3 percent of families and 7.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
