Carter County is a county in the state of Tennessee in the United States . The county seat is Elizabethton .

The county is located almost in the extreme northeast of Tennessee, borders North Carolina in the east , is about 30 km from Virginia in the north and has an area of 900 square kilometers, of which 17 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Sullivan County , Johnson County , Avery County, North Carolina, Mitchell County, North Carolina, Unicoi County, and Washington County .
history
Carter County was formed on April 9, 1796 from parts of Washington County. It was named after Landon Carter , an officer in the American Revolutionary War and politician from Tennessee.
One place in the county has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the Sycamore Shoals . Twelve buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of August 10, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Carter County had 56,742 people in 23,486 households and 16,346 families. The population density was 64 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.49 percent white, 1.00 percent African American, 0.20 percent Native American, 0.26 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.27 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.78 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.89 percent of the population.
Of the 23,486 households, 28.5 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 54.9 percent were married couples living together, 11.0 percent were single mothers, and 30.4 percent were non-families. 26.5 percent were single households and 11.0 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.35 and the average household size was 2.83 people.
21.4 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 9.2 percent between 18 and 24, 29.0 percent between 25 and 44, 25.4 percent between 45 and 64 and 15.0 percent were older than 65. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 94.5 males and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 91.6 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 27,371 , and the median income for a family is $ 33,825. Males had a median income of $ 26,394 versus $ 19,687 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,678. 12.8 percent of families and 16.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
